    Coamo es un municipio de Puerto Rico. Fundado el 15 de julio de 1570 por Cristóbal y Blas de Illescas, marcándolo así como uno de los pueblos más antiguos de la Isla después de San Juan y San Germán, se convirtió en municipio autónomo en 1579. Su nombre original era San Blas de Illescas pero luego fue cambiado por Coamo, una palabra taína que significa “lugar llano y extenso”. Área en que se situaban los indios y le llamaban Coamex.

    En los relatos relacionados con la colonización de Coamo no se menciona por ningún sitio la presencia de indios en este litoral, con una aislada excepción, en el hato de Guayama en el año 1569. Sin embargo, hay elocuente evidencia arqueológica, oficial y extraoficial, de su existencia en prácticamente todos los barrios de esta Villa durante la época precolombina. Por siglos aquí existió una numerosa población centralizada mayormente a lo largo de las cuencas de los ríos Cuyon y Coamo hasta la desembocadura de este último río en la aldea india conocida hoy día como El Cayito, en Santa Isabel. Los barrios de altura fueron los menos poblados por los indios probablemente por motivo al tupido bosque, topografía abrupta y a ausencia de ríos caudalosos.
